Leutze began his first version of this subject in 1849. Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze was born in Wurttemberg Germany, but he and his parents emigrated to America in 1825 to avoid religious persecution. His father also was an anti-monarchist activist whose ideals heavily influence Emanuel’s subject matter as a painter. The family settled first in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and later moved to Philadelphia. Emanuel Leutze (1816–1868) was born in Germany and trained as an artist in the United States and Europe.
